Gold Cherry
Gold Cherry
One of our most reliable and productive varieties, according to Bob Purvis Gold cherry is considered the hardiest (to -38F in River Falls, WI) of all sweet cherry cultivars and will pollenize most other sweet cherries. This and Lapins were the only sweet cherries that survived our crazy Fall -10F in October several years back. Fruit is firm, golden-yellow in color, and is considered easier to grow for its disease resistance, resistance to cracking, and that the yellow fruit is not as attractive for birds (who generally like cherries more than we do…). A great sweet cherry with a hint of tang, Gold cherry is a must for first time cherry growers, people in colder climates, and really anyone in general. One of our favorites. Hardy to zone 3b or zone 3a protected sites.
Gold cherry is self-fertile but may yield more if you pollenize it with something. Look to Lapins, as we believe Lapins to be the second hardiest of all sweet cherries we have grown (and we’ve grown just about all of them over the years!).
These trees are grafted onto Mahaleb, which is the most cold tolerant of all the cherry rootstocks in our experience.
