A small tree native to the Northern Great Plains that is very cold hardy, sand cherry produces tart dark purple to black edible fruits that can be eaten fresh (better when left on the tree for longer), dried, or made into jams and pies. We’ve heard they are excellent to juice although we don’t have experience with this. According to Les McCartney of Bozeman, “sandcherries make for a mean syrup that puts chokecherry syrup to shame. Also great in pies.” Hardy to zone 2 or possibly even zone 1.
