Viking Apple
Viking Apple
This is our first year growing Viking, so we don't have personal experience to share yet, which is always our goal. However, according to Bob, Viking is a “Large, purple-red summer apple with a sprightly flavor, best suited for areas with cool summers.”
Hardiness
Viking is listed as being hardy to -40F, which is on par with McIntosh in terms of cold tolerance.
Given this hardiness, we did not graft it onto a more cold-hardy rootstock, but we may do so in the future.
Rootstock & Planting
For Spring 2025, we are offering Viking grafted onto semi-dwarf M26 rootstock, which is also hardy to -40F.
If you live in an area that regularly sees temperatures below -40F and wish to plant Viking this year, you can bury the graft and let Viking grow out on its own roots.
