Lucy Glo Apple Seedlings (Bundle of 2)
Lucy Glo Apple Seedlings (Bundle of 2)
Grow your own Red Fleshed Apples from seed! The mother from these seedlings (pistil parent because we don’t know the pollen parent parent), is Lucy Glo, a red fleshed cross between Honeycrisp and Aerlie Red Flesh. They were much better than I expected for a store bought apple. Some have noted banana flavor, although when we tried this for the first time in 2022, we did not note any banana flavor, rather lots of berry notes. And what we had wasn’t even the best specimen because the apple was store bought and had been stored for months.
Note on the genetics of these seedlings: Each of these trees will produce genetically unique offspring. Mother nature will decide how the fruits from these seedlings will taste. But given that this was from a store bought apple, it is anyone’s guess as to what the fruit will be like. It could actually be an apple crab, because many orchards (presumably in Washington where this is from) will use crabapples such as Indian Summer or Snowdrift as the pollenizer. If this is the case then it could make for a super interesting tasting apple crab or a spitter. Or, the tree could have been pollenzed by Honeycrisp or another commercial cultivar. It is anyone’s guess. Regardless, the flesh should still be fairly red because generally the alleles of the genes that control for flesh color tend to be fairly dominant. If you purchase these seedlings, then let us know!
Likely hardy to -40F considering this is the hardiness of both grandparents.
Seedlings are 6-12 inches tall
