Red King Red Flesh Apple

from $99.99

This red flesh apple is one of the newest we have grown yet. We haven’t been able to obtain too much information on it but from what we have gathered, its a cross between Red Delicious and Malus niedzwetzkyana, a red fleshed crabapple native to parts of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and other surrounding countries. It is a newer apple with an iconic red flesh. From what we have read on forums, the apples are not very crisp but are sweet and have a berry taste, although some nurseries list it as tart but still somewhat sweet for a red fleshed apple, in which case that sweetness is likely from its Red Delicious parentage (and without the cardboard taste of Red Delicious!). Noted as good for desserts and fresh eating, this apple can store for several months after harvest. Hardy to zone 4, can tolerate -35F to possibly -40F.

Lastly, it did flower in 2024 but we pulled all the blossoms so that the tree could put more energy into growth as opposed to reproduction. The flowers are a beautiful red just like Malus niedzwetzkyana’s blossoms (see photos!), so this is also super ornamental.

Likely not the best candidate for climates that see below -40F. The older 7-9 ft are grafted onto smaller semi-dwarf G202, whereas the 5-6 and 6-7 ft trees are grafted onto semi-dwarf M7.
