These are seedlings that we have started from local Bitterroot McIntosh trees at Al and Mary Pernichele’s Frost Top orchard in Corvallis. Although we state that these are Mac x Spartan crosses, they were open pollinated in an orchard entirely of Spartan and McIntosh so we can’t say with 100% certainty that Spartan is the other parentage (although it is very likely). We feel some of these have the potential to be wonderful named varieties and given that 75% of the genetics will be Mac, (50% Mac plus 25% Mac from one of Spartan’s parents), that leaves only 25% to be unaccounted for. Of course genetic variability in apples does occur, Luke has personally found McIntosh seedlings that retained many of the McIntosh qualities. At the minimum, these seedlings could be great cider apples and you know they will be hardy considering Spartan and McIntosh are both zone 3 apples. These will be hardy -40F, possibly more.
